AEOvsTraditionalSEO
Page 1 on Google used to mean traffic. With AI Overviews appearing on roughly 45% of Google searches and ChatGPT, Claude, and Perplexity now answering questions directly, the rules changed. Here's what that means for independent Canadian practices.
SEO got you onto Google. AEO gets you into the answer.
Traditional SEO targets ranking. AEO targets citation. Same fundamentals, very different optimization stack.
The click is disappearing
AI Overviews already reduce clicks by up to 58% on the queries they appear on. The user gets the answer in the AI surface and never reaches your site. Ranking #1 on a query with an AI Overview increasingly means watching the win go to whoever AI cites in its summary.
Citation criteria are different
AI engines weight extractability, sourced statistics, expert attribution, and freshness. The Princeton GEO study (KDD 2024) shows citing sources adds +40%, statistics add +37%, and quotations add +30% to citation rates. Keyword stuffing actually reduces AI citations by 10%.
You can be cited without ranking
AI engines pull from a wider source pool than the top 10 Google results. A page that ranks 8th but is structured well, sourced well, and freshness-marked can outrank pages 1–7 in the AI citation lottery. AEO levels the field for smaller, newer practices.
Side-by-side comparison
AEO is additive. Most of the SEO fundamentals still matter — they're now table stakes.

When you still need traditional SEO
AEO doesn't replace SEO — it's the new top of the stack. The fundamentals still matter, just differently.
- Local intent search Someone Googling "family lawyer near me" still gets a Local Pack. Google Business Profile, NAP citations, and local schema matter. AEO covers GBP optimization too.
- Branded queries "[Your firm name]" should land users on your site. That's a baseline SEO win, not an AEO one.
- Long-tail informational "What is X" queries that don't yet trigger AI Overviews still depend on classical ranking. Optimize for both. They're cheap to do once.
Frequently asked questions
Should I cancel my SEO retainer and switch to AEO?
Not necessarily. Most independent practices we work with were paying $2,000–$5,000/month for SEO results that have been steadily losing click-through rate to AI Overviews. We typically recommend running an AEO audit first, identifying the highest-impact gaps, and then deciding what stays and what goes. Often the SEO retainer is paying for things you can already get within the AEO stack.
Does AEO replace traditional SEO?
No. AEO is additive. The fundamentals — schema markup, fast site speed, mobile-friendly design, sitemap, robots.txt — still matter and are now baseline. AEO adds new layers on top: extractability for AI, machine-readable pricing for agents, llms.txt for AI context, and a different content structure (40–80 word answer blocks, sourced stats, expert quotes).
How is content different in AEO?
AI engines extract passages, not pages. Each section needs to lead with a self-contained 40–80 word answer that works without surrounding context. The Princeton GEO study (KDD 2024) ranked nine optimization methods by citation lift: cite sources (+40%), add statistics (+37%), add quotations (+30%). Keyword stuffing — a traditional SEO tactic — actively hurts AI citation rates.
How long does AEO take to show results?
Faster than SEO. AEO improvements often surface in AI answers within 30–60 days because AI engines update their source pool more frequently than Google updates its index. Schema markup and content extractability can produce visible changes in citations within 2 weeks.
Why does this matter especially for solo practices?
Big firms have brand recognition AI engines already trust. Solo practitioners do not — but AI engines weight extractability, expert attribution, and freshness more than brand size. A well-structured AEO page from a solo lawyer can outcompete a poorly-structured page from a 50-person firm in AI citations. AEO levels the playing field in a way SEO never did.
