AI Pulse: ChatGPT Reads Your Page and Skips Citing You. New Data Shows Why.
Week of 2026-04-13 · Manta AEO
A study of 1.4 million ChatGPT prompts published this week found that the AI retrieves pages from across the web, then cites only about half of them. For an independent dental practice in Hamilton or a physiotherapy clinic in Ottawa, the implication is direct: being findable on Google is not the same as being cited by ChatGPT or Perplexity. Moz put a number on that gap too: only 12% of pages that rank in organic search also appear in AI-generated answers. Those are two separate problems, and most independent practices are not treating them that way.
This Week in AI Search
Google Expanded AI Mode to the Chrome Browser
Google launched AI Mode directly inside the Chrome browser this week, taking its AI-powered answer experience beyond Google.com and into the browser interface itself. More from Google
This matters for independent practices because the patient’s search journey is shortening. When someone in Mississauga types “does my chiropractor need to know about my blood pressure meds,” they may now get a direct answer inside Chrome before they ever see a list of clinic websites. If your practice’s content does not inform that answer, you are not in the room.
Ahrefs: ChatGPT Retrieves Pages It Doesn’t Cite
Ahrefs published findings from 1.4 million ChatGPT prompts showing that the AI retrieves many pages per query but cites roughly half of them. Pages that get retrieved but not cited are invisible to the person asking the question. The AI read them and moved on. Full study
Getting retrieved is not the same as getting credited. A physiotherapy practice in Ottawa could have solid treatment content that ChatGPT reads, then attributes to a hospital website instead. The study points to structure and external authority signals as what separates cited pages from skipped ones.
Reddit Gets Retrieved, Rarely Gets Cited
The same Ahrefs data showed Reddit pages appeared frequently in ChatGPT’s retrieval pool but were almost never surfaced as visible citations in the final answer. Reported by Search Engine Journal
Practices that have been told to build a Reddit presence should reconsider. Reddit does not translate into AI citations. The platforms that earn citations consistently have clear, direct answers on their own domains, not on third-party forums.
HubSpot Published a Case Study on Becoming the #1 CRM in AI Search
HubSpot detailed how it became the most-cited CRM brand in AI-generated answers by rebuilding its content around answer-engine formats: structured FAQs and comparison pages with verdicts stated upfront. Read the case study
HubSpot has a content team. An independent law firm in Toronto does not. But the method is identical at any scale: answer the specific questions your clients ask, in plain language, on your own website, with the answer in the first sentence. HubSpot’s results came from applying that consistently. No proprietary technique required.
New Data on What’s Getting Cited
Ahrefs: 1.4 Million Prompts, ~50% Citation Rate
In the most detailed AI citation study published this week, Ahrefs found ChatGPT cites roughly half the pages it retrieves. Pages that earned citations shared two traits: they gave direct answers first and had external recognition from credible sources. Pages that hedged or buried the answer were retrieved and then skipped. Full study
For a naturopath in Vancouver or an accountant in Calgary, the problem isn’t getting found. It’s earning the citation after you’re found. Structure and directness determine which side of that 50% line a page lands on.
Moz: Only 12% Overlap Between Organic and AI Search Rankings
Moz reported that only 12% of pages ranking organically in Google also appear in AI-generated answers for the same queries. Organic search rewards link authority and keyword relevance. AI search rewards directness and cited expertise. They are not the same system. From Moz
A well-ranked dental website in Barrie may be pulling Google traffic without appearing in a single Perplexity or ChatGPT answer. That 88% gap is where most Canadian independent practices currently sit: visible in Google, absent from AI search. These are no longer the same audience.
HubSpot: AI-Referred Visitors Convert at 58% Higher Rates
HubSpot’s 2026 State of Marketing report found that visitors arriving via an AI platform citation convert at 58% higher rates than those arriving through traditional organic search. Details here
A patient who reads a Perplexity answer citing your practice has already been told you’re the authoritative source. They arrive pre-sold. That’s a qualitatively different lead than someone who clicked your website from a list of ten results. For independent practices with no paid advertising budget, that conversion gap matters.
What This Means for Independent Canadian Practices
The Ahrefs citation data and the Moz overlap finding point to the same structural problem. Independent practices across Ontario have spent years building websites that rank well in Google. That still matters, but it is no longer enough. The patients those practices want, the ones asking specific questions to ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google’s AI Mode in Chrome, are getting answers from a different pool of sources, selected by different rules.
For independent law firms and accounting practices, the Ahrefs structure finding is the most actionable item this week. AI platforms favor content that gives a direct answer before the explanation. A page titled “Do I need a will if I rent in Ontario?” that opens with a one-sentence answer performs differently than one that spends three paragraphs on background before landing on the point. Reorganizing existing content costs nothing and takes an afternoon.
For dental, optometry, chiropractic, and physio practices, the Chrome AI Mode expansion changes the front end of the patient journey. Questions like “Is jaw pain a dental emergency?” are now often answered before the patient reaches any website. Manta has tracked this pattern in audits of Canadian independent health practices over the past quarter: the citation gap between practices with structured answer content and those without is widening, and the Chrome expansion will speed that up. The 12% organic-to-AI overlap figure means most practices ranking on page one of Google are invisible in the channel that is growing fastest.
One Thing to Do This Week
Pick the single most-asked question in your practice. The one your receptionist answers by phone three times a week. Write a short page, or a clear section on your existing site, that leads directly with the answer in one or two sentences, then explains why. No preamble. No background paragraphs first. AI platforms read for direct answers; if the answer is buried under context, the page gets retrieved but the citation goes to whoever answered it first. This is the specific change the Ahrefs data links to citation rates, and it takes under an hour with no developer required.
